Critical Factors to Consider for Smooth Pallet Distribution

Pallet distribution has played an integral role in streamlining supply chains in major industries. Aside from ensuring that products arrive safe, pallets help with inventory tracking as new tracking technology, such as radio frequency identification (RFID), grows in popularity in pallet distribution. However, you are only going to enjoy these benefits if you approach pallet distribution the right way. This article highlights critical factors transport companies must consider in their pallet distribution operations. Read on.

Pallet Rack Condition -- Proper pallet racking is a critical part of pallet distribution; therefore, logistics companies must pay particular attention to the condition of their racks before any trip. Unfortunately, most companies fail at this because they believe the racks are not exposed to the elements and will last a long time. However, nothing could be further from the truth because pallet racks loosen over time and begin to rattle. This exposes pallets to the risk of falling during transportation and causing significant damage to products before they reach their destination. While the function of inspecting pallet racks lies with the facility manager, logistics companies should do all they can to encourage drivers to do the same. This is especially the case if you have a large fleet and the maintenance team is overwhelmed.

Load Weight -- Pallets are designed with different load capacities, and this makes it possible for logistics companies to transport loads of varying weight within the same transport truck. The best part is that the pallets have clear labels indicating the amount of weight each can carry to avoid guesswork by the staff. Unfortunately, some staff can ignore these instructions, especially if you do not have enough pallets for a particular load capacity. While it might seem ok to load a 250kg product on a pallet with a load capacity of 200kg, the extra 50kg will have a detrimental impact on product distribution. As such, ensure that there are enough pallets of the required load capacities before loading on trucks for distribution.

Pallet-Rack Compatibility -- How compatible are the racks on your trucks with the different pallets you are using to distribute client products? This is a critical factor most new logistics firms fail to consider, especially when buying their first set of pallets. Your sole objective should be to find pallets that match the racks for easy unloading by forklifts. For example, if you cannot find pallet with slots for forklift tongs, buy those that have spacing between the pallet's bottom and the rack surface for easy reach by forklift tongs. Such compatibility goes a long way in improving the loading and unloading process.
